Kyleena is a small, T-shaped hormonal IUD containing 19.5mg levonorgestrel, offering 99.7% effective contraception for five years. PBS-listed since March 2020, it provides a lower-dose alternative to Mirena.
How It Works
Kyleena prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus, altering the uterine lining, and occasionally suppressing ovulation. It's immediately effective if inserted during days 1-5 of menstruation; otherwise requires seven days backup contraception.
Key Differences from Mirena
Kyleena contains less hormone(19.5mgvs52mg) and is smaller(28×30mmvs32×32mm) with a narrower insertion tube, making insertion easier for nulliparous women. However, it causes slightly more bleeding/spotting and lower amenorrhea rates (12.3% vs 18.6% yearly). Unlike Mirena, Kyleena is licensed only for contraception, not heavy bleeding management.
Suitability
Ideal for those wanting long-term contraception, particularly younger people or those who haven't given birth. Suitable during breastfeeding and for pregnancy spacing.
Contraindications: pregnancy, recent pelvic inflammatory disease, unusual bleeding, breast cancer history, and serious liver conditions.
Considerations
PBS-subsidised($6.80-$42.50), plus insertion costs. Side effects include irregular bleeding, headaches, mood changes, and acne. Doesn't prevent STIs. Requires monthly thread checks and regular healthcare follow-ups.
